Understanding what is being tested.

In this post, we'll explore questions that are being tested in the Linguaskill General Speaking test by Cambridge Assessment English. This will help us craft strategies for tackling them in subsequent posts.

Part 1 |

About the Speaking test.

The Cambridge Linguaskill General Speaking test is a fully online, computer-based test. With a total test time of 15 minutes, the test is to be completed by answering a number of questions split into 5 parts:

Important things to know.

  • Unlike questions in the Reading & Listening and Writing tests, questions in the Speaking test progress automatically.
  • This means that you cannot control the pace of the test or the speed of answering.
  • You will also have no opportunity to change your answers once you have given them.
  • Try to speak formally or in academic fashion. Speaking in an informal or casual manner will lead to lower scores.
  • Avoid colloquial language and do not use any non-English terms. These will typically lead to lower scores.
  • You do not need to speak in a "British", "American", or any other native English accent.
  • However, you do need to:
    • Speak clearly. Do not mumble your words.
    • Pronounce correctly. Pay particular attention to pronouncing contracted words, shortened words, and specific words correctly.
    • Enounce correctly. Pay attention to the stress and rhythm of how English words are spoken.
  • The more expertly you are able to do the three things above, the higher your speaking score will be.
  • Never keep silent. Use all the time that you have to speak. A good tip is to ignore the speaking timer and just speak. Let the timer cut you off. You will not get penalised for speaking too much, but you will get penalised for not speaking enough.
  • The Linguaskill speaking test does not evaluate whether what you're saying is factually correct. For example, if you tell Linguaskill that your name is "Harry Potter", a fictional character, Linguaskill will not penalise you for it.
Final |

What are you being tested for?

At the core of it, the Linguaskill General Speaking test evaluates your vocabulary and grammar skills, just like Reading, Listening, and Writing.

However, in the Speaking test, there is the extra condition of having to use your English skills and speak them quickly, with very little thinking time.

Most people struggle with the time/thinking aspect of the Speaking test. Not only must you form an opinion or what you wish to say quickly, you must be able to speak it accurately in one go.

There are some strategies you can apply to make answering the questions easier. These will be taught to you in the next post.
